SFX L'Builder Guides

Looking for a Soundly alternative on Mac?

When Soundly is the right choice, when a different sound effects manager fits better, and how SFX L'Builder approaches the problem for video editors.

Updated 15 Oct 2026 · 2 min read

Soundly is one of the best-known sound effects apps, and for good reason: it combines a cloud library of sounds with search across your own files, it runs on Mac and Windows, and it is widely used in post-production. If it works for you, keep using it.

People look for alternatives for a few common reasons. This guide covers them honestly.

Why people look for an alternative

  • They want to work offline. Some editors prefer tools that never need an internet connection.
  • They mostly use their own library. If you rarely use cloud sounds, you may want a tool built around your local files.
  • They edit video, not audio. Many sound tools are designed around DAWs. Video editors often want sounds sent straight to Premiere Pro, After Effects or Final Cut Pro.
  • Pricing. Some people prefer a different payment model from a subscription.

What to compare

QuestionWhy it matters
Does it search my local files well?Your own library is usually the one you trust most.
Can I describe a sound instead of guessing its name?Saves time on large, messy libraries.
How does it hand off to my editor?Drag and drop, or a direct send to the timeline?
Does it keep sound licences?Important before client delivery.
Does it work offline?Matters on location, on flights and for privacy.
How is it priced?Subscription, one-time purchase or free tier.

How SFX L'Builder approaches it

SFX L'Builder is built for video editors on Mac:

  • Quick Search over any app. Press ⌥ Space, describe the sound in English or Portuguese and audition the matches with the arrow keys.
  • Search by meaning. Sounds are analysed and tagged on your Mac, so "heavy wooden door" finds the right file even when it is called hit_03.wav.
  • Send to your edit. One key sends to After Effects and Premiere Pro; Final Cut Pro gets an FCPXML import; DaVinci Resolve and CapCut get a trimmed WAV.
  • Your files stay yours. It reads your folders and drives where they are, never overwrites originals, and runs offline with no account.
  • Free sounds with their licence. Search Freesound from inside the app; the author and licence stay with every download.
  • Extras for editors. Similar-sound search, duplicate review, production projects and 40 on-device AI voices.

It is in private beta for Apple silicon Macs.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Soundly if you want a large cloud library, a cross-platform app and a tool many studios already use.
  • Choose SFX L'Builder if you edit video on a Mac, mostly use your own library, and want to find and place sounds without leaving your timeline.

You can also use both: they read the same files.
